You get 2 mic/line/instrument inputs, 6 line inputs, 10 line outputs, headphone out and 8-channel optical I/O. The optical ports alternatively support stereo TOSLink (optical S/PDIF).

Oczywiście ich liczba zmienia się w zależności od częstotliwości próbkowania (przy najwyższej obsługiwanej wartości 192 kHz będzie to 10 wejść i 14 wyjść). MOTU 828es może współpracować zarówno z komputerami PC i Mac, jak również z urządzeniami mobilnymi z systemem iOS. Dzięki sterownikom dla Windows i MacOS X urządzenie oferuje niską latencję przy połączeniu przez Thunderbolt i USB.

Interfejs jest wyposażony w dwa wejścia MIC/LINE/INSTR typu combo [XLR/jack] z oddzielnymi pokrętłami GAIN, włącznikami zasilania Phantom +48V i tłumikami Pad. Do dyspozycji mamy też po 8 wejść i wyjść analogowych [jack 1/4”], wyjście MAIN (L, R) typu XLR oraz dwa wyjścia słuchawkowe z niezależną regulacją głośności. Model 828es udostępnia ponadto po dwie pary cyfrowych wejść i wyjść optycznych, koaksjalne złącza S/PDIF (IN, OUT), wejście i wyjście MIDI oraz złącza WORD CLOCK (IN, OUT/THRU). Do tego dochodzą porty Thunderbolt i USB2.0 oraz NETWORK [RJ45] (AVB Ethernet). Urządzenie wyposażono też w gniazdo prądowe IEC.

Interfejs 828es udostępnia też wbudowany mikrofon TALKBACK oraz sekcję kontroli odsłuchu z przyciskami A i B (możemy podłączyć dwie pary monitorów i przełączać między nimi), MUTE i MONO. Na panelu przednim znajdziemy też dwa wyświetlacze oraz pokrętła MENU i MONITOR. Pokładowy mikser DSP udostępnia 48 wejść, 7 stereofonicznych szyn AUX, 3 grupy, dostęp do 64 wejść sieciowych oraz rozmaite efekty (m.in. pogłos, korektor, bramkę szumów i kompresor). Do dyspozycji mamy również matrycę pozwalającą na elastyczną konfigurację sygnałów audio.

W przypadku portu Thunderbolt – do częstotliwości 96 kHz – urządzenie oferuje wsparcie dla maks. 256 kanałów audio (możliwość jednoczesnego nagrywania 128 kanałów i odtwarzania 128). Korzystając z kolei z portu USB, z poziomu komputera mamy maks. dostęp do 128 kanałów (64 I/O; 44.1 lub 48 kHz). Port NETWORK umożliwia podłączenie dodatkowego interfejsu AVB, natomiast jeśli skorzystamy z opcjonalnego przełącznika AVB Switch możliwe jest połączenie z maks. pięcioma urządzeniami. Interfejs 828es może stać się również częścią większej sieci AVB.

Do obsługi wszystkich funkcji i parametrów urządzenia służy aplikacja internetowa Pro Audio Control dostępna z poziomu dowolnej przeglądarki niezależnie od systemu operacyjnego (Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android). Do interfejsu 828es dodawane są też programy Discovery, AudioDesk oraz MOTU Audio Tools. Możliwa jest też współpraca z aplikacją dla urządzeń mobilnych z systemem iOS.
